Great article, really thought provoking.

I would love to know where you made your fake ice cream sundae too. Making my own sanpuru is on my list of things that I want to do when I visit Tokyo in July.

This was a great read. How a different approach to food can create a valued profession for the restaurant business (assuming from your piece), and one that probably doesn't exist in the U.S. to the extent that it does in Japan. I would guess that their plastic food is exquisite and manufactured to perfection since I read how meticulous Japanese are at their chosen craft.

That being said, I'd like to hear how they approach technology and the quality of it. I'm under the impression that they don't consider the craftsmanship of their gizmos to the same degree that they would value the creation of a plastic piece of steak, or even origami. Do they consider their phones for that matter, to be on the same plane as a handcrafted piece of furniture?

Do they appreciate or value the construction of say an iPhone or Windows Phone or Android device the same way they would value a Fujitsu product?

While I was in Japan, I was amazed at the detail in the plastic foods, but I never gave it much more thought than, "They must really want people to buy their food."

The bit you said about food presentation is SO true that it's insane!!! Even in a simple convenience store, all the fruits are packed, perfectly anged and stacked. And the onigiri and other items are always presented and packaged to perfection!
