I felt liberated in Japan - I could wear what I wanted because a lot of what Japanese people wear is a weird take on foreign clothing. And even if they all thought I was weirdly dressed, they are all too polite to say anything - so ha!

In London, major cities and Europe, the UAE etc, how you dress is so important and people are visibly cruel if you dress strangely or not well - or cant be bothered.

But in Japan - anywhere in Japan - I could probably walk around in a Kaftan and feel secure. I went to the local store in my pyjamas at 2am in the summer- it was glorious. And I did it recently in America at night too - but i had a long coat on - so no one could see.

Reminds me of how I felt in Italy. I went to the grocery store in 70 degree weather in shorts and a t shirt just to gets eggs. The fashionistas of Rome looked somewhere between shocked and appalled that I was in public and wasn't in proper dress. Now that I'm back in the states I writhe when I see people in public in their pajamas or sweat pants.
