Ongakuyōbi: Shugo Tokumaru

This album actually hit the top 40 in Japan – which is great, but it would be unfathomable in the US for a record this weird to compete with Justin Bieber and 50 Cent.

Tokumaru plays over 100 instruments, and uses most of them on every album. Everything you hear in these songs is him.

The videos are consistent, but they aren’t his. The song lyrics are based on dream diaries and were rendered in the pretty/cutesy animation style for seemingly every track on “Port Entropy.”

I recommend “Port Entropy,” but you can also dive into “Exit” for a more traditional singer-songwriter set of tunes.

And, just for fun, here’s his cover of Peter, Bjorn and John’s “Young Folks” –
